Epristeride is a synthetic nonsteroidal agent that inhibits the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). It is used in the treatment of prostate cancer and benign prostatic hyperplasia. Epristeride has been shown to inhibit the proliferation of human prostate cancer cells, DU-145, by binding to cb2 receptors. This inhibition leads to a decrease in the production of reactive oxygen species and reduces DNA damage. Epristeride also has been shown to inhibit the activity of protein kinase C and phospholipase A2, which are enzymes that play an important role in inflammation.
Epristeride has not been evaluated for carcinogenic effects or reproductive toxicity.
