Progesterone is a natural steroid hormone that is produced in the ovaries and testes, as well as in the adrenal glands. It belongs to the class of progestogens, which are related to testosterone. Progesterone is an important component for regulating many aspects of female reproductive health, including pregnancy and birth. The colorimetric method can be used to detect progesterone concentrations in high concentrations with a color change from yellow to red. Progesterone can also be synthesized by introducing 16a-hydroxyprogesterone with 17a-hydroxylase and 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase enzymes into an organic solution containing picric acid. This reaction produces 16a,17a-epoxyprogesterone, which is converted into progesterone by side chain cleavage.
