Ethyl 1,2-dichloroethyl ether is an allylic oxidant that is used as a model system for studying the biosynthesis of allylic compounds. This compound has been shown to have yields that are 3-4 times higher than those of other allylic oxidants, such as trifluoride and furan. Ethyl 1,2-dichloroethyl ether also reacts with chloride ions to form the corresponding chloroalkene. This reaction can be reversed by adding acetyl chloride or alkene. The compound can be epoxidized with hydrogen peroxide and acid methyl esters to form emulsions.
