1-Ethynylcyclopentanol is a cyclic ether that is used as an inactivator of nitroparaffin. It has been shown to be reactive with cytochrome P-450, forming the corresponding hydroxylated product and hydrogen peroxide. 1-Ethynylcyclopentanol reacts with phenols, producing a substituted phenol. This reaction can be catalyzed by light or metal ions such as copper and zinc. 1-Ethynylcyclopentanol also undergoes elimination reactions with water to form acetaldehyde, ethanol, and propionaldehyde. The elimination reactions are catalyzed by acid or base catalysis.
