It is also an intermediate in the synthesis of indolenine, which is an alkaloid that has been identified as a potential anti-inflammatory agent. The chemical structure of ethyl 3-methyl-1H-indole-2-carboxylate was determined using gas chromatography mass spectroscopy and it was found to have a chloride, ester group, and oxindole functional groups.
