4-Ethyl-1H-pyrazole is a ubiquinone that belongs to the group of benzoquinones. It is synthesized by a sequence of reactions in which pyruvic acid reacts with ethyl acetoacetate and sodium ethoxide in methanol. 4-Ethyl-1H-pyrazole has been found to be present in all lineages of living organisms, including bacteria, archaea, eukaryotes, and viruses. In bacteria, 4-ethyl-1H-pyrazole is synthesized by the conversion of menaquinol (a form of vitamin K) to 4-ethyl-1H-pyrazole and 2,3 dihydrobenzoquinone. The synthesis of 4-ethyl 1H pyrazole from menaquinol is catalyzed by an enzyme known as menaquinone reductase (Mnqr).
