The reaction starts with the addition of ethyl formate to collidine and the formation of an unstable intermediate, which undergoes elimination to produce ethyl (4-oxocyclohexyl)acetate. This compound has been shown to be a bridgehead molecule in the synthesis of other organic compounds.
