Ethyl 2-ethylacrylate is an organic solvent that belongs to the class of monomers. It is used in pharmaceutical dosage forms as an actuator, or a substance that produces a measurable physical change in response to a stimulus. It has been shown to act as a cationic polymerization initiator, which is important for polymers such as polyvinyl pyrrolidone and polystyrene. The allyl carbonate group in ethyl 2-ethylacrylate can be synthesized by the reaction of acetic acid and allyl bromide, with the help of an acid catalyst. This compound can also be used as a binder or a diisocyanate for polyurethane materials. Ethyl 2-ethylacrylate contains hydroxyl groups that react with calcium stearate, which is commonly added to plastics, rubbers, and other materials to provide lubricity.
