2-Ethoxycarbonyl-methyl-phthalimide (EMCP) is a cationic surfactant that belongs to the class of fatty alcohols. It is used as an antimicrobial agent in cosmetics and personal care products. EMCP has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria by binding to the cell membrane and causing a change in cell permeability. This leads to leakage of intracellular components, including water, ions, and other essential nutrients. The binding of EMCP also causes damage to DNA and protein synthesis by interfering with the function of ribosomes. This drug can be used in combination with benzalkonium chloride or eugenol for increased antimicrobial activity.
EMCP is also a strong activator for particle formation, which may be due to its ability to react with alkoxy radicals and benzoate ions.
