3-Ethylrhodanine is a merocyanine dye that has an ethyl group attached to the rhodanine ring. It is produced by condensation of 2-bromo-3-nitrobenzoic acid with carbon disulfide in the presence of an acceptor molecule. This chemical process can be carried out at room temperature and produces high yields. 3-Ethylrhodanine has been shown to have a variety of electrochemical applications, such as nature, devices, morphology and efficiencies. The red shift observed in this dye was found to be due to the alkyl substituents on the carbon atoms adjacent to the nitrogen atom in the rhodanine ring.
