Ethyl 1H-Benzimidazole-2-carboxylate (EBIC) is a chemical compound that stabilizes the imidazole ring in the conformation required for antituberculosis activity. EBIC has been shown to inhibit the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium avium complex, and is also active against other strains of mycobacteria. EBIC also inhibits an enzyme called 2-chlorobenzimidazole (CBI), which is responsible for synthesis of pyridine nucleotides, leading to DNA damage and cell death. EBIC binds to chloride ions in the bacterial membrane, which alters its structure and inhibits protein synthesis by blocking the binding site on ribosomes. Finally, EBIC can be detected by fluorescent labeling due to a fluorine atom at position 3.
