Ethyl 5-nitro-1H-pyrrole-2-carboxylate is a natural product that has been shown to have significant antibacterial activity against tuberculosis. The compound binds to the bacterial cell wall, thereby inhibiting cell growth and causing cell death. In addition, it also inhibits the growth of Gram-positive bacteria such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Ethyl 5-nitro-1H-pyrrole-2-carboxylate binds to the surface of bacteria, forming an amide linkage with the carboxylic acid groups on peptidoglycan in the bacterial cell wall. This chemical reaction prevents the formation of crosslinks between amino acids in peptidoglycan and causes the cell wall to soften and eventually rupture. It also binds to isosteres (substitution patterns) on proteins found in Gram negative bacteria, leading to their death by preventing protein synthesis.
