Description:
Ethyl 6-(hydroxymethyl)pyridine-2-carboxylate is a colorless liquid with a sweet odor. It is soluble in water, alcohol, and ether. Ethyl 6-(hydroxymethyl)pyridine-2-carboxylate can be synthesized by the reaction of ethyl acetoacetate and dimethyl carbonate in the presence of sodium ethoxide under refluxing conditions. This reaction forms an addition product that is hydrolyzed to form the desired product.
