1-Ethylpyridinium chloride is an antimicrobial agent that is used for the treatment of inflammatory skin diseases. This drug has been shown to be effective in reducing the number of bacteria present in dental cavities, but it does not have any activity against Streptococcus mutans or Actinomyces viscosus. 1-Ethylpyridinium chloride inhibits bacterial growth by binding to imidazole hydrochloride, which is a constituent of bacterial riboflavin synthesis. This binding prevents the formation of an enzyme-substrate complex required for the conversion of riboflavin to vitamin B2. 1-Ethylpyridinium chloride also inhibits the growth of Streptococcus mutans and Actinomyces viscosus by inhibiting enzymatic methods that are involved in cellulose and particle degradation. The chemical structure of 1-Ethylpyridinium chloride is pyridine with one ethyl group
