Description:

3-Ethyl-2,4-pentanedione is a methyl ethyl diketone that has been shown to have a proton affinity and reactivity. It can be synthesized by the reaction of ethylene diamine with acidified chloroethane in the presence of anhydrous sodium carbonate. 3-Ethyl-2,4-pentanedione has been used to inhibit mitochondrial membrane potential and increase the production of reactive oxygen species in HL60 cells. This chemical compound also inhibits nitrite ion reduction, which may be due to its ability to bind nitrite ions by forming a complex with them.
