It has a chain structure with two methyl esters. This compound can be polymerized to form a copolymer and has been shown to have high efficiency in the visible range of light. The molecule also has a wavelength range of 600 nm to 800 nm, which is ideal for polymer solar cells. 2-Ethylhexyl 4,6-dibromo-3-fluorothieno[3,4-b]thiophene-2-carboxylate is also an acid methyl ester and can be converted to the acid methyl form with strong bases such as sodium methoxide or potassium hydroxide.
