Ethyltrimethylammonium Iodide (ETAI) is a compound with the chemical formula CH3CH2NHCH2CH2I. It is an organic-inorganic hybrid material that accumulates preferentially in the cytoplasm of cells and nuclei, where it inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the surface of ribosomes. ETAI has been shown to inhibit amide formation and hydroxylation reactions within proteins. This inhibition prevents the cells from synthesizing functional proteins, leading to cell death. ETAI also has a significant effect on papillary muscle contractility, which may be due to its ability to bind to the myofilaments in cardiac muscle cells.
