3-Ethoxy-4-methoxybenzonitrile is a synthetic intermediate that can be used for the synthesis of apremilast. 3-Ethoxy-4-methoxybenzonitrile is synthesized from 3-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzonitrile and bromoethane in a catalytic asymmetric process. The reactants are dissolved in acetonitrile and hydrochloric acid, which serve as the solvent and catalyst, respectively. The product is isolated through liquid chromatography with a mobile phase of acetonitrile. 3-Ethoxy-4-methoxybenzonitrile has been shown to have antiinflammatory properties, which may be due to its inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis.
