Elemene is a taxane drug, which is a type of chemotherapy that inhibits the growth and spread of cancer cells. It has been shown to induce apoptosis in cells by binding to microtubules, thereby preventing the movement of cellular components such as organelles or proteins within the cell. This drug has been investigated for its potential use in treating bladder and cervical cancer. Elemene has low bioavailability due to its poor water solubility, requiring administration with food or other fluids at least 30 minutes before eating. The active form of elemene is metabolized by hydrolysis of ester bonds by various carboxylesterases and glucuronidases. The major metabolites are malic acid and organic acids, which are excreted through urine.
