Ethyl 2-chlorobenzoate is an analytical reagent that can be used to identify replication inhibitors. It is also used in the synthesis of heterocycles, such as pyridine and quinoline. This chemical has been shown to inhibit human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) replication and to have amine-releasing properties, which may be beneficial for the treatment of chronic bronchitis. Ethyl 2-chlorobenzoate reacts with alkalis to form chloroethanoic acid and hydrogen chloride gas. The reaction is reversible, so hydrolysis occurs in acidic environments. Ethyl 2-chlorobenzoate may also cause congestive heart failure due to its high toxicity.
