Endomorphin-1 is a member of the opioid peptide family that is active at δ receptors. It has been shown to have analgesic effects in a rat model of inflammatory bowel disease, and to increase locomotor activity in rats. Endomorphin-1 has also been shown to bind with high affinity to the kappa-opioid receptor. The structural analysis of endomorphin-1 reveals that it is a cyclic peptide consisting of six amino acids arranged in a ring structure. It has biological properties that are similar to those of other opioid peptides such as endorphins and morphine, but there is no evidence that endomorphin-1 can be used as an analgesic or addictive drug.
