Exendin (9-39) is a peptide that is an inhibitor of the enzyme dipeptidyl peptidase-4, which cleaves the amide bond between the amino acid residues at positions 9 and 39 in exendin. It has been shown to reduce postprandial plasma glucose levels in animals by inhibiting glucagon secretion from pancreatic alpha cells. Exendin (9-39) also binds to receptors on vascular smooth muscle cells, causing vasodilation and increased renal glomerular filtration rate. This drug has also been shown to have insulinotropic effects in humans and can be used as a therapeutic agent for type 2 diabetes mellitus.
