1-Ethynyl-2-nitrobenzene is an organonitro compound that has been shown to have anticancer activity in a number of cell lines. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of carcinoma cells by inhibiting DNA synthesis and also by inducing apoptosis. The hydration of 1-ethynyl-2-nitrobenzene occurs through the reaction with water and is accompanied by the release of nitric oxide, which is thought to be the active species responsible for its cytotoxicity. This reaction can be carried out efficiently and quickly using electrochemical methods. The terminal alkynes in 1-ethynyl-2-nitrobenzene are electron donors that are able to react with amines, forming adducts that have been shown to have anticancer activity.
