2-Ethoxy-3-ethylpyrazine is a synthetic compound that has been shown to have an odorant binding affinity for the receptor protein 2. It has a high concentration in coatings and is used as an odorant in perfumes and deodorants. 2-Ethoxy-3-ethylpyrazine has been shown to have a strong effect on mammalian behavior when it is present at high concentrations. The behavioral response to this chemical was studied by laser ablation of the olfactory epithelium and granule cells in the nose of experimental rats. This chemical is also found in human lung tissue where it may play a role in chemotaxis, or the movement of leukocytes (white blood cells) towards sites of injury or infection. 2-Ethoxy-3-ethylpyrazine can be synthesized from ethyl pyruvate and chloroethane. A polymerase chain reaction assay was used to identify this chemical in polyacrylam
