Product Information
Ethyl 4-fluorophenoxyacetate is a carboxylic acid that is synthesized by the reaction of phosphorus oxychloride with hydrazine. It is produced as a racemic mixture of two isomers, one having an ethoxy group and the other with a methoxy group. The insecticidal properties of this compound have been shown in tests using houseflies and cockroaches. Ethyl 4-fluorophenoxyacetate has been shown to be an effective insecticide for use on crops such as cotton, tobacco, and corn. It has also been used in the synthesis of other pesticides such as carbaryl.
Ethyl 4-fluorophenoxyacetate can be made by reacting phosphorus oxychloride with hydrazine. This reaction proceeds through an acid-catalyzed mechanism that results in the formation of ethyl 4-fluorophenoxyacetic acid (EFPA) as well as a chlorohydrin intermediate.
