It has a constant boiling point and viscosity, which makes it useful for voltammetry experiments at constant temperature. 1-Ethyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate has been used to study the interaction of ions with hydroxyl groups in solvents and fluorescence properties of acetonitrile. This chemical is also used as an anion in formamide and cyclic voltammetry studies.
