N-Ethyl-beta-methoxy-3-(trifluoromethyl)phenethylamine is a polarographic reagent that has been used for determination of the optimum pH for enzyme activity. It is soluble in ethyl alcohol, and has a pKa value of 4.2. The optimum pH range for this compound’s enzymatic activity is between 5.0 and 6.5. The highest rate of reaction with microsomes was observed at an optimum pH of 5.0 and the lowest rate at an optimum pH of 7.5. This compound also has the ability to form oximes with amines, which can be used as analytical or preparative detection agents for amines in organic solvents, such as supernatants from cultures of various organisms or extracts from animal tissues or organs.
