Ethyl 2,2-difluorohexanoate is a stable, non-volatile liquid that is soluble in many organic solvents. It can be synthesized by the reaction of ethyl formate and hydrogen fluoride in acetonitrile with a palladium catalyst. This compound has been shown to be an excellent reagent for the synthesis of sulfoxides and sulfones. Ethyl 2,2-difluorohexanoate has been used as a catalyst in industrial processes such as the production of polyester resins and nylon fibers. It is also used as a solvent in analytical chemistry procedures such as gas chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography.
