Description:

Benzyl 1-methyl-2-oxoethylcarbamate is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent that has been used clinically as an adjunct to surgery. It is a synthetic compound that contains the benzyl group, which can be modified by thiocyanation, dihalogenation, and transfer reactions. This compound also has two phosphate groups and two modifications: one on the benzylic carbon atom and one on the methylene carbon atom. Benzyl 1-methyl-2-oxoethylcarbamate is synthesized from benzaldehyde, propionic acid, formaldehyde and ethylene oxide in a reaction catalyzed by phosphorous pentoxide. The product of this reaction is purified with chromatography or distillation before use.
