4-(4-Diethylaminostyryl)-1-methylpyridinium iodide is a pyridinium dye that has been used for electron microscopic studies of nerve cell membranes. Electrophysiological studies have shown that this dye blocks the action of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction, which is thought to be due to its ability to bind with high affinity to acetylcholine receptors on the postsynaptic membrane. This dye stains axons and ganglia in the nervous system and can be used for confocal microscopy. 4-(4-Diethylaminostyryl)-1-methylpyridinium iodide has also been used as a fluorescent marker in vitro experiments investigating degenerative diseases such as mitochondrial membrane potential.
