D-Glucose-2-13C has been used in pharmaceutical preparations for diabetes management and as a tool for cancer research. This molecule has also shown promise as a biomarker for metabolic disorders and disease activity. D-Glucose-2-13C binds to mammalian tissue, adipose, or other cells with high levels of glucose transporters. The uptake of this molecule occurs via two mechanisms: (1) diffusion; and (2) carrier mediated transport.
