Fluoranthene is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon that exhibits fluorescence and light emission. It has been shown to activate the DNA-dependent RNA polymerase at physiological concentrations, leading to increased RNA synthesis. Fluoranthene has also been shown to inhibit protein synthesis in bacteria and fungi by binding to the ribosome and inhibiting the attachment of amino acids to tRNA molecules. It can be used as an indicator for oxidative stress or metal toxicity due to its ability to bind covalently to proteins. Fluoranthene is chemically stable, but can be degraded by degraders such as bacteria, fungi, and enzymes in water.
