5-(2-Fluoroethyl)-1-[(2R,4S,5R)-4-Hydroxy-5-(Hydroxymethyl)Oxolan-2-Yl]Pyrimidine-2,4-Dione is a retinoic acid analog that inhibits protein synthesis in cells by binding to the cellular retinol binding protein. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of herpes simplex virus (HSV) and inhibit the production of virus progeny in cell culture. 5-(2-Fluoroethyl)-1-[(2R,4S,5R)-4-Hydroxy-5-(Hydroxymethyl)Oxolan-2-Yl]Pyrimidine-2,4-Dione also binds to and inhibits the activity of viral retinoic acid receptors. This drug has been shown to be a potent antiviral agent against HSV with a half maximal inhibitory concentration of 0.3 μM.
