Product Information
Fluvastatin is a statin drug that lowers blood cholesterol levels by inhibiting the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase. It has been shown to be effective in reducing the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke. Fluvastatin also inhibits the enzymatic activity of toll-like receptor 4, which may be important for its anti-inflammatory effects. This drug interacts with a number of other drugs, such as warfarin, erythromycin, ketoconazole, and oral contraceptives. Fluvastatin is metabolized to its active form in the liver by cytochrome P450 enzymes and excreted by the kidneys. The active form of fluvastatin sodium is a white crystalline powder with a melting point of 205°C. Fluvastatin sodium is marketed under the trade name Lescol® (or Lescol® SR).
