9-Fluoro-11β,21-dihydroxy-16α,17-(isopropylidenedioxy)progesterone is a synthetic glucocorticoid that has been shown to be effective in the treatment of inflammatory diseases. It binds to the glucocorticoid receptor and is eliminated from the body by hepatic metabolism with a half-life of about 12 hours. 9-Fluoro-11β,21-dihydroxy-16α,17-(isopropylidenedioxy)progesterone is administered through intravitreal injection and can be used as an alternative to laser ablation or surgery in patients with macular degeneration. This drug may also be used as a gel chromatography agent for the separation of liposomal formulations.
