4-Fluorobenzenesulfonic acid (4FBSA) is a byproduct of the sulfonation process, which is the reaction between an organic compound and sulfuric acid. It is a mixture of four isomers that are created when 5-bromo-2-fluoroaniline reacts with SO3. 4FBSA can be synthesized using other methods such as reacting chlorosulfonic acid with a fluoroarene. The kinetics of the reaction have been studied and it has been determined that there are two mechanisms: one involving H+ ions in the first step and another involving phosphine in the second step. The mechanism involving phosphine is much faster than the other mechanism, which may be due to its hypervalent character.
