2-Fluoro-4-methylphenol (2FM) is a diagnostic probe that is used for the detection of C. difficile. It has been shown to be useful for the diagnosis of colorectal carcinoma, as well as for detecting headspace volatiles in patients with bowel disease. 2FM reacts with the decarboxylase enzyme of C. difficile and produces fluoroacetate, which can be detected using gas chromatography. This reaction also occurs with other clostridia, but at a much slower rate. 2FM can be used to evaluate inflammatory bowel disease by measuring the levels of trifluoromethoxyacetonitrile (TFAA) or acetonitrile (ACN).
