3-Fluoro-5-nitroaniline is a reagent used in the activation of anilines. It has been shown to be a good kinetic and thermodynamic substrate for trypsin, with a catalytic rate constant of 1.1 × 10 M s. 3-Fluoro-5-nitroaniline reacts with chloride ions to produce the corresponding nitrosochloride, which is then hydrolyzed by water to form nitrite and hydrochloric acid. 3-Fluoro-5-nitroaniline can be prepared from 3,5-difluoroaniline by reaction with nitric acid and acetonitrile followed by heating at 120 °C for 2 hours.
3-Fluoro-5-nitroaniline can also be used as a chromogenic substrate for the determination of enzymatic activity in kinetics studies of esterases, amidases, lipases,
