4-Fluoro-2-methyl-1H-indole-5-ol (4FM5OH) is an orthoacetic acid that inhibits the production of acetoacetate and trimethyl. These compounds are involved in the process of angiogenesis, which is important for cancer growth. 4FM5OH does not affect the production of other metabolites, such as ethyl acetoacetate and methyl acetoacetate, so it has a higher selectivity than other inhibitors. 4FM5OH also inhibits spontaneous tumour growth in animals, but does not inhibit normal cell growth. This compound may be useful in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, which is characterized by increased permeability to fluids and cells. 4FM5OH also has antiangiogenic properties due to its ability to inhibit the production of new blood vessels from pre-existing ones and to block signalling pathways that promote angiogenesis.
