4-Fluorobenzenesulfonamide is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that belongs to the class of sulfonamides. It is an analog of piroxicam and has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects in erythrocytes, muscle cells and other tissues. 4-Fluorobenzenesulfonamide binds to a number of metal ions by forming two hydrogen bonds with the sulfonyl group and one hydrogen bond with the amide group. This binding leads to inhibition of the enzyme carbonic anhydrase, which is responsible for catalyzing the conversion of carbon dioxide into bicarbonate ion and water. The affinity constants for 4-fluorobenzenesulfonamide are determined using dimethylformamide as a solvent. Crystallography studies on x-ray crystal structures show that there are three different types of atomic orbitals corresponding to fluorine, nitrogen, and carbon atoms.
