It is a cyclic compound with a phenyl ring and the amino acid histidine residues on its backbone. The unmodified form of Fmoc-(3S,6S,9R)-2-oxo-3-amino-7-thia-1-azabicyclo[4.3.0]nonane-9-carboxylic acid has an affinity for pentapeptide sequences containing histidine residues in the sequence HXHXXH where X can be any amino acid other than proline. This compound can also chelate metal ions such as proton and can undergo conformational changes to bind metal ions
