5-Fluoro-4,6-dihydroxypyrimidine is a metal salt that is prepared by the reaction of formamidine acetate with phosphorus oxychloride. The resulting 5-fluoro-4,6-dihydroxypyrimidinium chloride reacts with chlorine to yield 5-fluoro-4,6-dihydroxychloropyrimidine. This compound can be purified by extraction with an alkoxide and isolation using high yields. It is used as a diluent in the production of formamidine acetate and as a chlorinating agent for waste water. It also has an acid diester function which makes it useful in the production of phosphoric acid.
