3-Formylbenzoyl chloride is a clear liquid with a pungent odor. It is used as an intermediate in organic synthesis. 3-Formylbenzoyl chloride can be synthesized by the reaction of benzoyl chloride with formaldehyde and sodium hydroxide in liquid ammonia. The resulting product has two isomers, isophthaloyl chloride and isophthalic acid, which are distinguished by their melting points: the former melts at 49°C and the latter at 130°C. This product contains trace amounts of chlorides, which are removed by distillation.
