5-Formylbenzofurazan is an active compound that has a high potency and is a blocker of the adenosine receptor. It also binds to xanthine oxidase and blocks the enzyme's activity. 5-Formylbenzofurazan has been shown as an analogue of nifedipine, which is used for the treatment of high blood pressure. Nifedipine blocks the calcium channels in cell membranes, thereby reducing calcium influx and decreasing muscle contraction. 5-Formylbenzofurazan can be found in two tautomeric forms, one with a benzene ring in the alpha position (alpha form), and one with a double bond between carbons 3 and 4 (beta form). The beta form is more potent than the alpha form as it inhibits potassium ion channels more effectively.
