Fluoro-3-(acetoxymethyl) ester (FAM) is a fluorescent probe that is used as an experimental model in the study of the apoptosis pathway. FAM binds to cell membranes and is taken up by cells, where it accumulates in the cytosol. The fluorescence intensity of FAM increases as intracellular calcium levels increase. This probe may also be used to measure changes in cytosolic calcium levels during cellular energy metabolism, such as mitochondrial function and glycolysis. It has been shown to bind to acetylsalicylic acid and 2-aminoethoxydiphenyl borate, which are drugs that are used for treatment of inflammatory disease. Fluoro-3-(acetoxymethyl) ester binds to the ryanodine receptor, which is involved in regulating intracellular calcium levels. The fluorescence signal from FAM can be detected using a confocal microscope or a laser scanning microscope with appropriate filters.
