Ferrous L-lactate is a form of iron that is soluble in water and lactate. It is used to treat iron deficiency anemia, which can be caused by chronic blood loss, gastrointestinal bleeding, or inadequate dietary intake. The iron in ferrous L-lactate is bound to the amino acid lysine and then combined with lactate, which protects it from enzymatic inactivation. Ferrous L-lactate has anti-oxidant effects and can also increase the hematologic response of the body. Ferrous L-lactate has been shown to promote the absorption of calcium and pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), both important nutrients for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
