2-Fluoro-5-hydroxyl-L-tyrosine HCl is a radiopharmaceutical that is used as a radiotracer for positron emission tomography (PET) imaging of cancer. It is synthesized by reaction of 2-fluoro-5-(2,2,2,-trifluoroethyl)phenol with L-tyrosine in acid medium. The solvent and impurities are removed by preparative high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Radiochemical purity is determined by analytical HPLC, and the radiopharmaceutical is characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), mass spectrometry, and infrared spectroscopy. The radiotracer has been validated for use in humans and animals in clinical trials. It has been shown to be more efficient than other analogues such as diaryliodonium chloride or on-line coupling agents.
