Description:

1-Formyl-4-piperidinecarboxylic acid is a cyclisation product of hydroxylamine and acetylcholine. It inhibits the activity of acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme that breaks down the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. The inhibition of this enzyme increases the concentration of acetylcholine in the brain, which can lead to convulsions or death. 1-Formyl-4-piperidinecarboxylic acid is used in research as an inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase for studying the function of this enzyme. This drug has also been shown to be an analogue for hydrolysis by oxime, an efficient method for hydrolyzing esters under alkaline conditions.
