4-(4-Fluorophenyl)benzonitrile (4-FPB) is a water-soluble, ligand that can be used as a homogeneous catalyst in a variety of reactions. 4-FPB is most often used as an oxygen scavenger and has been shown to be reusable and stable in the presence of water. It has also been shown to catalyze a variety of reactions, such as the coupling of two different molecules, oxidation reactions, and the synthesis of heterocycles. The yield from these reactions are not always high but can be increased by adding tetraethylammonium iodide (TEAI). 4-FPB cycles are reversible and do not produce any hazardous byproducts.
