2-Formyl-5-phenylfuran is a thionyl compound that can reversibly react with dimethylformamide (DMF) and redox cycle in the presence of active oxygen species. 2-Formyl-5-phenylfuran is an analogue of nitrofuran, which is used as a fluorescent probe for detection and identification of chloride ions. The chloride ion is activated by the anion radical, and the electron transfer from chloride to 2-formyl-5-phenylfuran leads to chemiluminescence. 2-Formyl-5-phenylfuran also has an active oxygen species and can be used as a reagent in x-ray structures.
